The Vatican Observatory
The Vatican Observatory at the Castel Gandolfo, Italy, is one of the oldest observatory’s in the world. It can be traced back to the “committee to study the scientific data” in 1582 under Pope Gregory XIII. (Keep in mind this is the same institution that jailed Galileo in 1633. )
It was not until 1891 that the Roman Catholic Church established the Vatican Observatory.
The Vatican Observatory Research Group (VORG), which is the second Vatican center, controls the 1.8m Alice P. Lennon Telescope at the Thomas J. Bannan Astrophysics Facility. VORG is based out of the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona’s Steward Observatory. In 1993, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) was completed, also in Arizona. It is also one of the world’s most advanced telescopes.

Father Gabriel Funes

In as early as 1986, Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a high ranking Vatican official, was quoted as saying : “It is probable that there are other beings, that is not very strange, because among the human and angelic nature, of which we have the theological certainty, there is a big too much discrepancy. And among this man, in whom the spirit is subordinate as to the matter, and the Angels that are alone spirit, are probable that they exist of the beings that have spirit with the very less matter and body of that, that we have. Guy Consolmagno
In 2005, Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmango wrote a booklet titled “Intelligent Life in the Universe? Catholic Belief and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life.” The booklet was in a part of the “Explanations Series.” Consolmango told the Catholic News Service that the goal of the booklet was to reassure Catholics that they “shouldn’t be afraid of these questions” and that upon finding intelligent life, “we are going to find out that everything is truer in ways we couldn’t even yet have imagined” instead of it meaning that everything we believe in is wrong.
